Furniture Design and Construction
Course Syllabus

This is an advanced class for students who have already taken two semesters of Creative Woodworking and have acquired a basic knowledge of the tools, techniques and processes required for building functional and sculptural objects out of wood.
Safety is emphasized in this class and students will be expected to take notes on all the safety topics presented in class. No student will be permitted to use any power tool without first demonstrating knowledge and skill of the proper procedures specific to each tool.
Students are expected to complete three pieces by the end of the semester. The first project, required of all students, will be a scale model of a piece of existing furniture. This project and all remaining projects will require the completion of scale drawings and parts lists before any cutting takes place.
The second project will be a piece of furniture designed in the style of Shaker Furniture, which the class will receive a thorough presentation on.
The final project will be a piece of furniture that is inspired by the work of a particular furniture maker or furniture style of interest to the student. This project will require a bit of research and a presentation to the class.

Course Requirements
1. Students are expected to complete all 3 projects in this class.
2. Students are required to bring their own pencils to class every day!
3. All Students will be responsible for cleaning up their own areas, putting tools and projects away. The last 5-10 minutes of each class will be devoted to cleaning up the shop. Each and every student is expected to participate in the daily clean-up with two students assigned to sweeping duty for each class period.
4. Students are expected to attend all classes on time, prepared to work at the start of class and stay until dismissed.
