Creative Woodworking 1
Course Syllabus
Teacher: Mr. Gurner [email protected]
The objective of this course is to introduce students to the safe and proper use and care of the tools, equipment, technologies and materials used in the fabrication of wood products.
Safety is emphasized in this class and students will be expected to take notes on all the safety topics presented in class. No student will be permitted to use any power tool without first demonstrating knowledge and skill of the proper procedures specific to each tool.
Projects are organized around a series of assignments in hand and machine tool operations and fabrication techniques aimed at the development of safe working habits and familiarity with a variety of woodworking processes. Each project will build upon the skills learned in the previous project, while introducing new skills.
While this is primarily a hands-on project based class, there will also be weekly lectures, demonstrations and discussions on a range of related topics that students will be expected to master. Students can expect 2 quizzes over the course of the semester on these topics.
Final grades will be calculated as follows:
-Projects 50%
-Quizzes and Tests 10%
-Conduct and Safety 20%
-Effort 20%
Course Requirements
1. Students are expected to complete 2 to 3 projects in this class.
The first project will involve the use of hand tools to fabricate a lamp designed by each student out of a rough-sawn block of wood.
The second project will be the design and fabrication of a cutting board made by laminating a combination of hardwoods.
The third project will be decided by each individual student but subject to instructor approval depending on skill level and available time. Each project will require the creation of drawings and parts lists, before any piece of wood is cut.
2. Students are required to bring their own pencils to class every day!
3. All Students will be responsible for cleaning up their own areas, putting tools and projects away. The last 5-10 minutes of each class will be devoted to cleaning up the shop. Each and every student is expected to participate in the daily clean-up with two students assigned to sweeping duty for each class period.
4. Students are expected to attend all classes on time, prepared to work at the start of class and stay until dismissed.
